Polka

Polka is a fun an exhilarating rhythmic country dance for partners that has its roots stemming from polka dancing that was done in Poland and Czechia in the 1800's. Today, it is a prominent dance in the local Texas dance halls, especially in the southeastern sections, such as Houston. Its basic step is mainly characterized as a quick, quick, slow with an optional lilting action. The couple progresses around the dance floor going in a counter-clockwise direction while maintaining the beat of the music. The couple can maintain a closed position or show off their dancing skills with some high energy spins, kicks, and weaves at show stopping speed! Two Step

Two Step is the most popular among all the country dance styles and is a favorite among all country dancers. Two Stepping has its origins coming from a myriad of dance styles, but it's most influential is the foxtrot. The Two Step that is done nowadays started developing in the early 80's with the cultural explosion that came from the move, Urban Cowboy. Today, the most recognizable two step is a pattern of quick steps (1 beat each) and slow steps (2 beats each) that are rhythmically interwoven with feet passing each other in a progressive manner; the couples then dance around the dance floor in a counter clockwise direction. There are also other variations that are also done at local bars, that introduce a shuffle or hitch step. Two Step allows for practically any pattern or move to be done which makes writing a list of all of them almost endless! West Coast Swing

West Coast Swing has a long and constantly evolving history that dates back to the 1930's. It first came onto the seen when Dean Collins brought a more tamed style of Lindy Hop to Hollywood when starring in several films. His style spread and caught the eye of several ballroom instructors and franchise owners, mainly Fred Astaire, who noticed its popularity on the social scene. Skippy Blair coined its now well known name as "West Coast Swing" in 1959. By 1988, it had become the state dance of California. Today, West Coast Swing or "Modern Swing" is a universal dance that is literally done all over the world. It's mainly done to blues music, but is virtually adaptable to all forms of music such as pop, R&B, country, and more. WCS is a slotted dance that has a lot of freedom and expression that lets the partners dancing express their personalities and their musicality like no other dance. Key concepts for WCS are connection, compression, and elasticity throughout movements of the dance. Usage of an anchor, or anchor step, is a vital aspect of WCS. The moves in WCS are LIMITLESS, and have incredible flair, especially when dips are involved and phrase changes occur. Waltz

The waltz has been an enduring dance style due to its elegance and grace dating back to the 18th century in Germanic speaking parts of Europe. Immortalized by famous musicians, such as Chopin, the three quarter timing of waltz makes it one of the few dances that truly has its own music. Of course as country music started adopting three quarter timing into some of its music, waltz dancing was bound to follow. Waltz is a smooth dance that is characterized by its beautiful sweeping movements, rise and fall, and most importantly the use of contra body movement: where the shoulders and hips of the opposite side of the body move forward with the opposing leg. Beginners in waltz start with the traditional box. As they master the movements of the box, they begin progressing down the line of dance while maintaining their frame, timing, rise and fall, contra body, etc. As you can imagine, waltz is a bit complicated and takes a while to really get down! Did I mention there are two different styles of waltz? There's Viennese Waltz and American-Smooth Waltz. That's a whole other discussion that's too long to delve into right now. East Coast Swing

East coast swing is a calorie burning, high energy dance that originated in the United States around the 1940's. It's biggest influences come from other dances such as Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Jitterbug. It's mostly a six count dance that mainly consists of sets of triple steps (1&2, 3&4) that are broken up with a rock step (5,6). The music that is most associated with it is big band music and rock and roll. Really fun aspects of the dance is the normal incorporation of lifts and other stunts, though we highly recommend these not be done socially and only be done with extensive practice and with spotters. f you're looking for east coast swing lessons near you, you can book a private lesson with us by clicking here or give us a text or call at (832) 764-2087

The basic steps of Triple two are two walking step (1, 2) followed by two sets of triple steps (3&4, 5&6). Triple Step is mainly done to music that is a bit too smooth and slow to two step such as "You Should Probably Leave" by Chris Stapleton. Triple two has shaping and swing elements that give it a very graceful looks while at the same time adding sharp and distinct flare with more two step patterns and musicality. Country Swing

Country Swing is a fun and energetic combination / fusion of other dance styles such as west coast swing, east coast swing, and two step. Popularized in the Southwest part of the United States, it has steadily spread throughout the United States over the past few years. The basics steps of Country Swing are typically a weigh change going from one foot to the other in two beats (so Right to Left for the follows, and Left to Right for the Leads), followed by a rock stop that is also two beats with each foot getting a full beat. This then repeats. Country Swing is also a stationary dance that typically stays in one place on the dance floor. This allows for greater improvisation and creativity with moves and less concentration on the complexity of any footwork.
